Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) is based at the Scottish Marine Institute on the west coast of Scotland. SAMS is one of the world’s oldest oceanographic institutions being founded in 1885. SAMS has biological, physical, geochemical and microbial research departments as well being a partner in the University of Highlands and Islands. Research focus is on marine surveying, marine geochemistry and sedimentology, oceanography, marine GIS and impacts of offshore renewables. The Biogeochemistry and Earth Sciences Department consists of technicians, geologists, geochemists, biogeochemists, radiochemists and engineers. This group has experience of surveying, sampling, analysing and interpreting marine sediments and depositional environments from deep-water basins to the continental shelf.
